Our infrared sauna at Kinematics Strength + Recovery is a state-of-the-art, full spectrum cedar wood Clearlight Santuary sauna.
Why is infrared heat better than traditional saunas?
Regular saunas have to get much hotter than infrared saunas to give you the same benefits, because they heat the air first, which then indirectly heats the body by convection. By contrast, infrared saunas are heated by non-visible wavelengths of light (in the infrared part of the spectrum—hence the name). Infrared light penetrates deep into the body, heating tissues directly, rather than heating the air first. The air in an infrared sauna is also a lot drier, making it easier to breathe.
Additional to a more comfortable experience, infrared saunas have been shown to have increased health benefits due to the depth of wavelength penetration.
Benefits of an infrared sauna include:
One of the biggest infrared sauna health benefits is the ability to increase your blood circulation and stimulate the sweat glands, releasing built up toxins in the body (e.g. toxic metals such as lead, mercury, nickel and cadmium as well as sulfuric acid and other organic and inorganic compounds). As the skin is the largest organ in the human body, sweating is one of the most effective ways for toxin elimination.
Increased blood circulation carries off metabolic waste products and delivers oxygen-rich blood to oxygen-depleted muscle, so they recover faster. Incorporating infrared heat therapy into your treatment or training plan can help to decrease pain and muscle spasms as well as accelerate your overall recovery time.
An infrared sauna increases the core temperature of your body. Bacteria and viruses can’t survive under certain temperatures and this increased heating helps your body fight these off, giving your immune system an added boost. This enhanced immune system, combined with improved elimination of toxins and wastes via intense sweating, increases your overall health and resistance to disease.
As you relax in the gentle infrared heat, your body is actually hard at work trying to cool itself down. This homeostatic process involves increasing your heart and metabolic rate in order to enhance sweat production and blood circulation,
Another one of the biggest benefits of an infrared sauna is relaxation and the chance to de-stress. People today live busy lives and we are now under more daily stress than ever before. Infrared saunas are shown to decrease the production of cortisol (the main hormone for stress in the body), and have an affect on the autonomic nervous system putting you in a parasympathetic (rest and digest) state allowing your body to heal and unwind.
Regular sweating allows your body to detoxify nasty chemicals, pollutants and dirt lodged within the dermal layer of the skin. Increased blood circulation from an infrared sauna draws your skin’s own natural nutrients to the surface which has shown to relieve acne, eczema, psoriasis, burns, lesions and scarring.
We encourage you to find your own comfortable resting state in the sauna. You can meditate, flow through some gentle stretches or listen to podcasts and music by connecting to the in-built speakers in your sauna on your own device or by using the iPad provided. Reap the additional therapeutic benefits of the coloured LED lighting located in the ceiling of your sauna.
Although our Sanctuary sauna is a spacious 3 person sauna, bookings are currently restricted to 1 person at a time (unless you are coming with a family member or someone you live with). The saunas cedar wood is naturally anti-microbial and will be cleaned between each session.
